Event #65: $10,000 Main Event

Galtieri Gets Lucky on River

• Level 20: 6,000-12,000, 2,000 ante

Filippo Galtieri opened to 26,000 from middle position only to have Jason Leifer three-bet from the big blind to 72,000. Galtieri instantly made the call as the dealer spread a {6-Spades}{2-Clubs}{6-Clubs} flop.

Leifer took his time before betting out 66,000 only to have Galtieri instantly move all in for his last 182,000. Leifer called before Galtieri's chips could enter the pot and the cards were tabled.

Galtieri: {K-Spades}{J-Clubs}
Leifer: {Q-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}

The turn of the {6-Hearts} gave Galtieri an additional out, but it would be the {K-Diamonds} on the river that sent Galtieri out of his seat to celebrate with his fellow Italians on the rail as he doubled to 532,000 in chips.

The Turn Saves Esterling

• Level 20: 6,000-12,000, 2,000 ante

Mike Sowers opened for 25,000 under the gun and received a call from Christopher Shaw in the hijack. Jeffery Esterling then three-bet all in for 146,000 from the cutoff, the button and blinds all folded, and Sowers moved all in over the top for 325,000, which drove Shaw from the hand.

Sowers: {a-Hearts}{q-Clubs}
Esterling: {j-Hearts}{j-Spades}

Esterling got it in good, but the {7-Hearts}{9-Hearts}{q-Diamonds} flop was disaster as Sowers paired his queen. "Ten," Esterling requested for a sweat. The dealer delivered something ever better when he burned and turned the {J-Clubs}. Esterling spiked a set and locked up the double. The meaningless {5-Clubs} was put out on the river to make it official, and Sowers sent a good portion of his stack across the table.

King-High Win for Zaichenko

• Level 20: 6,000-12,000, 2,000 ante

From the hijack, Nick Yunis opened with a raise to 24,000 and Andrey Zaichenko defended his big blind before both players checked the {A-Spades}{A-Clubs}{8-Spades} flop as the {J-Hearts} landed on the turn.

Yunis fired out a delayed continuation-bet of 40,000 and Zaichenko check-called as the river landed the {8-Clubs} and both players checked.

Zaichenko tabled his {K-Spades}{6-Spades} for a busted flush draw and king-high as Yunis mucked.

Tedeschi Busts Lowery

• Level 20: 6,000-12,000, 2,000 ante

Paul Tedeschi raised to 26,000 from late position and it folded over to Phillip Lowery who three-bet shoved over the top for 169,000 total from the big blind. Tedeschi thought for a brief moment before moving forward a call.

Tedeschi: {K-Hearts}{J-Spades}
Lowery: {6-Spades}{6-Clubs}

The two were racing for Lowery's tournament life heading to the flop. The dealer tapped the table and produced a flop that read {j-Diamonds}{9-Hearts}{3-Hearts}, pairing Tedeschi's jack and giving him the lead. The turn was the {8-Hearts}, meaning that Tedeschi held a tight grip on the hand heading to fifth street. The river was another jack - the {J-Clubs} - and Lowery made an early exit from the Amazon room. Tedeschi pulled in the pot and now has about 655,000 in chips.

Good Start For Keranen

• Level 20: 6,000-12,000, 2,000 ante

Kyle Keranen opened from the under the gun, Zachary Sloane three-bet shoved for 126,000 from middle position and Keranen called.

Keranen: {A-Hearts}{Q-Spades}
Sloane: {A-Clubs}{K-Clubs}

The board ran out {J-Diamonds}{Q-Hearts}{J-Clubs}{2-Clubs}{J-Spades}, giving Keranen jacks full of queens to eliminate Sloane.

High Hopes for Haugen; Benger, Smith in Contention for Lead on Day 5

[user249920]
Matthew Haugen holds the lead with 291 players left.
Matthew Haugen holds the lead with 291 players left.

Welcome to Day 5 of the planet's most prestigious poker tournament, the Main Event of the 2014 World Series of Poker here at the Rio All-Suite Hotel and Casino.

The starting field of 6,683 has been whittled down to 291 after 19 long levels of no-limit hold'em, and Florida's Matthew Haugen sits atop the chip counts with a massive stack of 2,808,000, which will be good for 230 big blinds at the start of play. Haugen is no stranger to deep runs in events sporting huge fields, as he navigated through a sea of nearly 8,000 runners to finish 18th in Event #51: $1,500 No-Limit Hold'em for a score of $62,726. This time, the stakes are far higher for the Jacksonville native, as he has pole position in the race for a first prize of $10 million.

Despite Haugen holding a chip lead of nearly 500,000 over second-place Zach Jiganti, plenty of thoroughbreds will be breathing down his neck if they can continue to run hot as Day 5 dawns. Canada's Griffin "Flush_Entity" Benger bagged 2,329,000 to end Day 4, good for third place, and Dan Smith (2,229,000), Farid Jattin (2,122,000), and Brian Hastings (2,079,000) also posted stacks north of 2 million. Numerous other dangerous players lurk with stacks, including Martin Jacobson (1,594,000), Andrey Zaichenko (1,484,000), Matt Waxman (1,453,000), and Isaac Baron (1,275,000). Mark Newhouse, meanwhile, will return with 1,301,000 to try to notch an incredible back-to-back November Nine appearance.

The pressure intensifies and the stakes will continue to climb as play begins at Level 20 (6,000/12,000/2,000) and players bluff, value-bet, squeeze, and make tough folds to position themselves for the final two days of play in this year's WSOP. Play is set to begin at noon local time here in Las Vegas, so don't miss a single update as the PokerNews live reporting team catches the beats, bluffs, and big pots that will determine who has a shot at fame and fortune after five more grueling two-hour levels of play here on Day 5.
